Hampshire look worth a wager at 11-10 to beat Surrey, with stakes returned if their County Championship Division One game at The Oval ends up a draw.

Hants should arrive at the Kennington venue in fine fettle after coming so close to getting back to winning ways at home to Somerset last week, following a bold declaration by skipper James Vince. The Cidermen finished on 88-8 at the Rose Bowl after being set 161 for victory off 31 overs.

By contrast, Gareth Batty needs to pick up the morale of his charges after Saturday’s galling One-Day Cup final defeat to Nottinghamshire at Lord’s. It was a third HQ showpiece defeat on the spin and, after posting 297-9, they dropped match-winner Alex Hales (187 not out) early and reduced the Outlaws to 150-5.

Earlier in the week, Surrey’s draw at Yorkshire was a sixth game without a win since starting the four-day campaign with an easy triumph over Warwickshire. Hampshire have won twice since a stunning success at Headingley in their opener.
