Match preview

Although a far cry from last summer's one-day-international World Cup success, there was plenty of promise from England's second-string side in their six-wicket win over Ireland on Thursday.

England cruised to victory in the first of three ODIs at the Ageas Bowl, Sam Billings and Eoin Morgan wrapping up the win with unbeaten knocks of 67 and 36 respectively after David Willey showed why he was unlucky to miss out on last year's tournament with figures of 5-30.

It was a thoroughly dominant display and that alone enhances the appeal of backing a low-scoring affair in Hampshire.

With the teams using the same strip for all three contests taking place in Southampton, that should slow up the pitch and it is worth noting only one side surpassed 250 runs in the four matches this venue hosted at last year's World Cup.

That, along with the fact England have scored fewer than 200 runs in three of their last four wins over Ireland and the batting fragility of the tourists, suggests evens could be a touch big for the match to feature under 530.5 runs.

There was not a lot to shout about for Ireland beyond the 59 not out from Curtis Campher but Kevin O'Brien was also steady with 22, having also registered 28 in Southampton against England Lions and 126 not out in an intra-Ireland match, so he may be worth a small bet to top-score for his country.
