Match preview

England's Test batsmen have swept all before them this summer but the white-ball side, under new captain Jos Buttler, found India's bowlers far too hot to handle in Tuesday's first ODI at The Oval.

Having won the Twenty20 series 2-1, India ended the one-day opener as a contest inside the first eight overs, reducing England's star-studded top order to 26-5.

Jasprit Bumrah recorded career-best figures of 6-19 as four of England's top six – Jason Roy, Joe Root, Ben Stokes and Liam Livingstone – were dismissed for ducks and Jonny Bairstow, fresh from a century in each innings of the Test win over India, made just seven.

Visiting openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan compounded England's gloom by knocking off a target of 111 in just 18.4 overs so Buttler, who succeeded World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan at the start of the month, faces an early test of his motivational skills.

Just two days after their mauling at The Oval, England are evens to bounce back at Lord's but their opening batsmen can expect another tough new-ball test against Bumrah and Mohammad Shami.

England's recent ODI form at Lord's has been patchy, losing five of their last ten games and needing a famous Super Over to see off New Zealand in an extraordinary 2019 World Cup final.

Opener Roy was dismissed for 17 that day and he has a modest one-day record at Lord's with a top score of 40 from six innings. His runs line looks too high at 29.5, a mark that he has failed to reach in ten of his last 15 ODI knocks, and he struggled in the T20 series against India, scoring four off 16 deliveries in the first game and bagging a first-ball duck in the second.

India's middle-order men were not required at The Oval, where Virat Kohli was sidelined by a groin strain, but Suryakumar Yadav played an innings for the ages in the final T20 at Trent Bridge.

His 117 off 55 balls came in a losing cause but enhanced his chances of a starting role in the T20 World Cup and his next objective is to establish himself in the ODI side.

Suryakumar has made a promising start to his 50-over career, scoring 31 not out, 53, 40, 39, 34 not out, 64 and six in his first seven innings, and he has the talent and the confidence to light up Lord's.
