Matches begin 11am Thursday

Surrey begin the defence of their County Championship title against the side they replaced as four-day kings, Essex, at the Oval this morning.

Last season’s runaway title victors are 6-10 to open their account at the first time of asking against an Essex outfit who were thumped by an innings and 87 runs at Hampshire in their Championship opener last week.

In a packed programme across the two four-day divisions, Worcestershire, relegated from the top tier last in 2018, appeal as the best bet on the card at Leicestershire.

The Midlands county lost star batsman Joe Clarke to Notts in the off-season but Riki Wessels has moved the other way to bridge that gap.

Allied with the Kolpak arrival of former South Africa seamer Wayne Parnell, they boast a unit capable of challenging for promotion and can make a winning start to the campaign.
