First ODI preview

The dust has barely settled on their Twenty20 World Cup final triumph on Sunday but England's white-ball heroes must now turn their attention to a three-match one-day international series with Australia, starting at the Adelaide Oval on Thursday.

England held their nerve in a five-wicket win over Pakistan to win the T20 trophy for only the second time in history and have become the first men's team to hold the ODI and T20 world titles at the same time.

And while Jos Buttler's side are the benchmark in limited-overs cricket, the hangover of the T20 World Cup could hinder them in this series.

With the ODI World Cup only a year away, it is an important series for both sides but it is asking a lot of England to switch focus so quickly and that is likely to have been factored in to the prices for the first ODI, with Australia 4-6 favourites.

But it can't be overlooked that the Aussies went out of a home World Cup at the Super 12 phase and they will be adjusting to life after Aaron Finch, who has retired, with Pat Cummins set to captain the ODI team for the first time.

With that in mind, the match markets could be worth swerving but a couple of player bets look enticing.

Mitchell Starc has been pretty reliable in this format for Australia recently, collecting 22 wickets in nine ODI matches since July 2021.

And he impressed at the Adelaide Oval in December last year, taking six wickets against England in the second Ashes Test.

With out-of-form Jason Roy returning, the visiting side's top order may experience a few teething issues and Starc could capitalise.

Only a week ago in Adelaide, England tore apart India by ten wickets in the World Cup semi-finals and Buttler was one of the stars of the show with an unbeaten knock of 80.

And while a number of England players may struggle to perform so quickly after the final, Buttler should be in high spirits after a strong World Cup and can still post a decent score in this contest.

Set to bat lower down the order this time, he can surpass his runs line of 30.5.
