Big-fight preview

Tyson Fury and Derek Chisora clash for the third time when they meet at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday night.

Fury is no stranger to trilogies and the Morecambe man twice came out on top in three bouts against big-hitting American Deontay Wilder. Fury holds the WBC heavyweight world title and Chisora’s chances of dethroning the Gypsy King appear extremely slim.

The pair first clashed in 2011, and although Fury walked away with the British and Commonwealth titles, it was a far from convincing victory.

The Gypsy King produced a far more potent display in their second clash at London’s Excel Centre in 2014, forcing Chisora to retire his corner, and it’s just 1-3 that Fury records another stoppage victory over his British rival.

Clearly, at the age of 38 Chisora’s best days are behind him and odds of 14-1 indicate that the Finchley fighter is not a serious contender for Fury’s WBC belt. Del Boy did get the better of 41-year-old Kubrat Pulev earlier this year, and that’s a fair effort on paper, but the Bulgarian was a shadow of his former self in that fight and the form of that win is not difficult to question.

Prior to that, Chisora was on the end of two gruelling 12-round defeats against Joseph Parker and his record is littered with wearying clashes. Those demanding contests are bound to have taken their toll on his body and his tank looked to have emptied in the second defeat to Parker.

Chisora put up a decent show against Oleksandr Usyk in 2020 but there’s a feeling that was the last dance for the Londoner and punters backing Del Boy, on what could be his final payday, are unlikely to be cashing in.

That said, there’s no guarantee we will see the rugged, slugging and heavy-hitting version of Fury that we saw in three clashes with Wilder.

The Gypsy King tends to save his best for the big-fight nights and this is hardly a contest that can be described as a tough test.

In between excellent wins over Dillian Whyte, Wilder and Wladimir Klitschko, the 34-year-old has been taken the distance by lesser lights Francesco Pianeta and Otto Wallin.

Christian Hammer lasted eight rounds, and earlier in Fury’s career, Kevin Johnson, John McDermott, Zack Page and Rich Power all took Fury the distance in fights no shorter than eight rounds.

Fury is the overwhelming favourite for this bout and his approach will almost certainly decide the outcome of Saturday night’s fight. Fury will be looking for an undisputed heavyweight clash against Usyk next year, and the 34-year-old is unlikely to make any mistakes here. However, on the evidence of what has gone before, when the Gypsy King has had eyes on a bigger prize, it may not be the crash-bang-wallop effort the prices suggest.

It’s 4-5 that this WBC title fight goes over the 6.5-round mark. That would cover a mid-to-late Fury stoppage victory, as well as a decision win, and that looks the way to play
