Big fight preview
Boxing’s brightest star Canelo Alvarez puts his WBA, WBC and WBO super-middleweight titles on the line against IBF champion Caleb Plant in a huge unification fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Alvarez hasn't suffered defeat since he lost to all-time great Floyd Mayweather Jr in 2013 and he has been in with some of the biggest names in the sport.
The Mexican has beaten Gennadiy Golovkin, Sergey Kovalev, Amir Khan, Callum Smith, Danny Jacobs, Billy Joe Saunders and Erislandy Lara to name a few and that has elevated him to lay claim to being boxing's pound-for-pound king.
The latest challenger to Canelo is the unbeaten IBF belt-holder Caleb Plant. Sweethands won his world title against Jose Uzcategui in 2019 and he has since gone on to make sucessful defences against Vincent Feigenbutz, Mike Lee and Caleb Truax.
There's no doubt that this is a step-up for the Nashville-born fighter, but he does have the tools to keep Alvarez at bay.
Plant is a tall super-middleweight and he boasts considerable height and reach advantages. Of course, that isn't anything that Canelo hasn't seen and dealt with before. However, if Sweethands can keep busy and force a high-tempo bout, behind a strong jab, he may be able to take this fight beyond the total rounds line that has been set at 9.5.
Jacobs took the Mexican the distance and the rangy Callum Smith also heard the final bell when he clashed with Alvarez last year.
Saunders went into his fight with Alvarez with more belief than his fellow Brit, and the Hatfield hitter took more risks.
The skills of Saunders saw him though to the eighth round in their May bout and if Plant sets up with a more cautious approach he may be able to stay out of the way of Canelo's power for a little longer.
Liam Smith is a step down from those opponents, but the Liverpool man was still able to take the Mexican nine rounds, and while Alvarez is a brilliant fighter, he may not be quite as ferocious as the prices suggest.
Six of Canelo's last nine bouts have all gone to at least the tenth and Plant looks capable of forcing the Mexican into the championship rounds.
