Fight preview

Lawrence Okolie defends his WBO cruiserweight belt against Michal Cieslak on Sunday night and we could get a fight to raise the roof at the O2.

It's hard not to have had doubts about Okolie after he put in a pair of tepid displays against British rivals Matty Askin and Isaac Chamberlain in 2018. However, the Hackney hitter has answered every call, he remains unbeaten and took his career to new heights when stopping Krzysztof Glowacki to win the WBO belt last year.

Okolie carries plenty of power at cruiserweight and he throws punches from unorthodox angles. That's likely to prove problematic for Cieslak, but the Pole is a heavy hitter himself.

This will be only the second time that the Radom boxer has fought outside of his homeland, but the other occasion gives us an indication of what to expect from him on Sunday night.

Cieslak went 12 rounds with Ilunga Junior Makabu when challenging the Congolese champ for the WBC cruiser title in 2020 and that is the standout performance on the Pole's card. However, that doesn't mean we will see a drawn-out affair at the O2.

Okolie's heavy hands always carry a major threat and if Cieslak adopts front-foot tactics then this could develop into a slugfest so backing under nine rounds may be the best strategy.

Jordan Gill challenges Karim Guerfi for the European featherweight title on the undercard at the O2 and, unlike the main event, this does look a bout likely to go the distance.

Gill is a slick, skilful fighter and will want to keep this fight at range after he suffered a bad cut in his previous bout against Alan Castillo.

Guerfi claimed the title with a good success over Andoni Gago, but only nine of his 30 wins have come via stoppage and this contest looks likely to go the full 12 rounds.
