Previews

Josh Warrington suffered the first loss of his career in a shock defeat to Mexican Mauricio Lara in February and will be looking to get his career back on track in the rematch.

The featherweight seemed to get his tactics wrong in the first bout, chasing an early knockout and leaving himself far too open against a bigger puncher. Lara duly knocked down Warrington in the fourth before a recovery from the heavy favourite was cut short when he was knocked out in the ninth.

Warrington has never been known as a knockout artist and must change his tactics to keep away from Lara’s heavy hands. The Leeds native will surely relish the return to fighting in front of his home crowd after their February fight took place behind closed doors.

The 30-year-old also went into that contest having been out of the ring for almost a year and a half and should be sharper this time.

Nevertheless, Warrington cannot underestimate Lara again and must use all his considerable experience to frustrate the Mexican in ways that he didn’t in the first fight.

With a home crowd back behind him and a change in fight tactics, Warrington should have enough class to steer clear of Lara’s heavier hands and take the fight the distance. Back Warrington to win on the scorecards.

On the undercard at Headingley Stadium, Conor Benn puts his undefeated record on the line against Adrian Granados. The American has won just one of his last four bouts but is not just a journeyman.

Granados has been knocked out only once in the eight losses of his professional career and will look to make it as awkward as possible for the fast rising Benn.

Benn’s win over Samuel Vargas was certainly eye-catching, finishing inside one round. However, at the prices it appeals to see this one go a little further.

Granados has been knocked out only once, demonstrating that he can withstand sustained pressure better than most. Take Benn to win this fight in the seventh to 12th rounds.

Arguably the greatest female boxer on the planet, Katie Taylor, also fights on this Leeds card, taking on American Jennifer Han.

Taylor won a tight decision victory over Natasha Jonas last time out and will be sharp for this contest with three fights in just over a year. In contrast, Han has fought just once in the last three years and may well be out of her comfort zone.

Six of Taylor’s 18 wins as a professional have come via knockout and it may be worth backing her to make her considerable recent experience advantage count here.
