Fight preview

Jamel Herring defends his WBO super-featherweight belt against Shakur Stevenson and it could prove the toughest bout to date for both boxers.

Herring is in the form of his life and Semper Fi took his career to a new level when outpointing Masayuki Ito to win the WBO title in 2019.

Three successful defences have followed for the 35-year-old, with the most notable coming last time out against Carl Frampton.

The Jackal struggled to make the step-up to super-feather, but the Belfast hero was still a two-division world champion and Herring dismantled him in six rounds.

Semper Fi proved too big and too strong in that contest, and although Stevenson has already successfully transitioned to the 130lbs division, this represents the toughest test Fearless has faced in this weight class.

Stevenson won the WBO featherweight belt in just his 13th professional bout and he is a slick and skillful fighter.

The 24-year-old comprehensively outpointed Jeremy Nakathila to win the interim title in June and that put him in pole positon for a crack at Herring’s belt. Fearless picked Nakathila off at will and he was able to land frequent single shots from range.

However, there wasn't a huge desire from Stevenson to close the gap, and even when the Namibian was down in the fourth round, the New Jersey fighter decided to stand off his man.

Fearless is unlikely to turn this into a war, given the toughness of his oppoent and everything points to a 12-round duel.

Stevenson is the more likely winner, but the better value could be to back the fight to go the distance at 4-7.
