Match preview

Just a week after his cousin Tyson confirmed his position as the best heavyweight in the world, Hughie Fury will look to continue his progress in the division against the experienced Christian Hammer.

Fury has bounced back well from his defeat to Alexander Povetkin in 2019, with comfortable successes against Pavel Sour and Mariusz Wach. His opponent here is a former European champion who defeated David Price back in 2017.

Hammer also ended up on the losing side against Hughie’s cousin Tyson back in 2015 but is firmly into the journeyman stage of his career now.

The Romanian-German has been beaten by Luis Ortiz and Tony Yoka in his last three fights, with a win over Saul Farah sandwiched between those defeats.

Fury will be looking to make a statement in front of the Newcastle crowd to prove that he is still an up-and-coming force in the division. Given that 14 of his 25 wins have come by way of knockout, that outcome looks overpriced to occur again here.

Elsewhere on the card, Chris Eubank Jr gets quick compensation for his cancelled fight two weeks ago. The middleweight takes on Wanik Awdijan, a German who has fought only twice outside his own country. Eubank should be able to get the job done with a minimum of fuss.

The Geordie faithful were denied a bout containing their hometown hero after Lewis Ritson pulled out of his fight with Hank Lundy on Thursday due to illness. Hartlepool-born Savannah Marshall will however defend her WBO middleweight title against Lolita Muzeya.
