Tournament preview

Eight super-lightweights battle it out as tournament boxing returns at the Liverpool Arena. Much like the Prizefighter series, the Boxxer event is a one-night battle, with the winner needing to come through a trio of three round contests.

Former English lightweight champion Lee Appleyard is in the field and he is joined by ex-Commonwealth king Sean Dodd. Many of the fighters in the line-up have clashed previously and it's fairly simple to get a gauge on the level of ability.

Tom Farrell and Appleyard have both lost to Dodd and there's no doubt that Masher has mixed it in a better grade than the rest of the field. However, the Merseyside man has suffered heavy defeats to Joe Cordina and Tommy Coyle and his latest loss to Jordan Ellison was a poor effort.

Dodd hasn't fought for two years and he had effectively retired from boxing. Masher hasn't been helped by the draw and he faces the only unexposed runner in the field in the shape of Cori Gibbs.

Gibbs is unbeaten in 13 low-key bouts, but he was a gifted amateur and would have probably made more waves by now had Covid not intervened.

The Birmingham boxer is another talented prospect from the Eastside gym and he was due to face Connor Parker in a British title eliminator in 2019.

That fight never materialised, but that's to the benefit of punters. Gibbs is slipping under the radar and this format is likely to suit the movement, workrate and skills of the Birmingham boxer.

The 27-year-old can see off Dodd in the quarter-finals and it should be a comfortable run to the title from there.
