Anthony Joshua lost his IBF, WBA (Super), WBO and IBO world heavyweight titles to 12-1 underdog Andy Ruiz Jr at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night.

The British star had been a heavy 1-20 favourite, and as short as 1-41 with RedZone Sports, to see off Ruiz, who was a replacement challenger after his original opponent Jarrell Miller, failed a drugs test.

While not quite on the scale of Mike Tyson's unbelievable loss to 40-1 shot James 'Buster' Douglas in 1990, Joshua's surprise dethronement ranks alongside Hasim Rahman's victory over Lennox Lewis in 2001.

Ruiz knocked Joshua down four times before the referee stopped the content in the seventh round. The Mexican-American fighter had been 250-1 to win in that round.

Joshua is 1-3 with Coral and Sky Bet to win a rematch with Ruiz, who is 5-2 to frank the form, with a draw 25-1.

Joshua's manager Eddie Hearn confirmed they will trigger a rematch clause in the fight contest, with the second fight likely to take place in the UK in November or December.
