Fight preview

Saturday's bout between Conor Benn and Samuel Vargas is being billed as a tough test for the Destroyer but a quick look at the prices tells you that task may not be as difficult as the fight build-up suggests.

Benn is a 1-12 shot to claim victory and add another decent name to his 17-fight unbeaten record.

The Destroyer is improving as he moves up in class and was an impressive winner against the capable Sebastian Formella last time out.

Vargas has been in with top-level performers Errol Spence Jr, Danny Garcia and Amir Khan, and this fight ties in nicely for Benn, as it's plausible that the could target a big domestic showdown against Khan or Kell Brook should he come through this fight.

More recently the Colombian was stopped by top prospect Vergil Ortiz Jr, and although the Bogota boxer is only 31 years old, he has plenty of miles on the clock and it's questionable how much is left in the tank.

A stoppage win for Benn would light up the welterweight division and at 8-11 he can be backed to shine.

On the undercard Shannon Courtenay challenges Ebanie Bridges for the vacant WBA world female bantamweight title and the Baby Face Assassin looks a brilliant bet to win by stoppage.

Courtenay has just one defeat on a seven-fight professional record and that came against Rachel Ball, who she was scheduled to fight again on Saturday night, before Ball contracted Covid-19.

However, that was an unfortunate defeat for the Watford puncher and it was clear that Courtenay was improving and gaining confidence as that fight progressed.

The Baby Faced Assassin is likely to have gained a lot from that experience and she made no mistake when stopping Dorota Norek on her return to the ring just before Christmas.

Bridges has mixed it with extremely low-level opposition in her five career bouts and she has failed to get three of those out of the ring before the final bell.

It looks likely that the Blonde Bomber will be completely outclassed on Saturday night and a stoppage win for Courtenay rates a strong play.
