Fight preview

Longstanding British rivals Amir Khan and Kell Brook are finally set to settle their feud when they clash in Manchester on Saturday night.

This bout has been touted for years, and while both fighters are now past their peak, it should still be a terrific tussle.

Both boxers are former world champions and they are certainly two of the best performers Britain has produced in recent years.

However, past glories are almost irrelevant in this contest and the key is trying to evaluate how much they have left to offer at this stage of their career.

Khan hasn’t been in the ring since he took on Billy Dib in 2019, but that was little more than an exhibition bout in Saudi Arabia and his last serious contest came when losing to Terence Crawford in April of the same year.

Crawford also accounted for Brook in 2020 and the defeat pretty much extinguished any lingering world title aspirations that Special K may have harboured.

The Sheffield star has been active more recently but that doesn't mean he will be in better condition and have more left in the tank.

King Khan has been stopped four times in his career but the former unified light-welterweight champion has managed to avoid a hugely punishing and damaging defeat.

The same can't be said for Brook - and that has to be a major concern. Special K stepped-up to middleweight to take on Gennady Golovkin in 2016, and while the Sheffield star was well rewarded for that fight, he came out of it with a broken eye socket.

Another heavy defeat at welterweight against Errol Spence followed for Special K, and that 2017 contest was the last time the 35-year-old made the 147lbs limit, prior to the Crawford reversal. This is a catch-weight bout at 149lbs and there have to be considerable concerns about Brook at this weight too.

Of course, Brook has been a superb fighter, and his efforts when beating Shawn Porter and snatching the IBF welterweight belt, will be remembered fondly. However, there have to be question marks about Special K's body holding up down at 149lbs after a series of damaging defeats.

Khan's ability to take a punch is always a worry but a weight-drained Brook may not carry all that much power. King Khan has the superior hand-speed and conditioning and that should see the Bolton boxer through this bout.

It's certainly a fight that could go either way. However, it's really tricky to see how Khan is not the favourite given the conditions of the contest. At 6-4 King Khan rates a royal bet to reign again.
