Preview

While the men's Alpine skiing at the 2022 Winter Olympics starts off with the speed events, the women's competitions kick off with a technical challenge and the giant slalom.

The defending Olympic champion is American superstar Mikaela Shiffrin, and she is the second favourite to repeat the golden performance behind current GS World Cup standings leader Sara Hector of Sweden.

Shiffrin won the first two giant slaloms of the season but after contracting Covid over Christmas, she has failed to reach the podium in either of the two GS races in 2022.

Hector, finally injury-free, is in the form of her life and is clearly the one to beat having won the last two GS races on the World Cup tour.

However, it's a competitive field with French veteran Tessa Worley in typically solid form and 2021 World Cup GS champion Marta Bassino gradually recovering from a poor start to the season.

But the best value call may lie with Petra Vlhova. The Slovakian skier raced a gruelling schedule in 2020-21 but was rewarded with the overall World Cup title. With a new coach, she has adopted a much more selective approach this year and has already wrapped up the slalom title.

While one-off races haven't been Vlhova's strong suit, she did claim GS gold at the 2019 World Championships and has finished second in two of the last three World Cup giant slaloms.

Gold goes to the competitor with the fastest aggregate time from two runs of the Yanqing track. The first begins at 2.15am UK and Ireland time, with the top 30 going again in reverse order from 5.45am.
