Match preview

The 2022 Winter Olympic opening ceremony takes place in Beijing on Friday but the first icy action happens on Wednesday at the Ice Cube - formerly known as the Water Cube when it hosted the 2008 Olympic swimming races.

There are plenty of events at the Winter Olympics that would result in almost certain death if attempted by the average person. However, there's a serene start to the festivities in the form of curling with the mixed doubles round-robin matches beginning just after midday UK and Ireland time.

Curling - something akin to bowls on ice - has been a happy Olympic hunting ground for Great Britain and in the mixed doubles they are represented by Scotland's world champion pair Jen Dodds and Bruce Mouat.

GB face a tough start against World Championship bronze medalists Sweden and at the prices it could be worth backing the Swedes.

Almida de Val and Oskar Eriksson went unbeaten through the group stage of that World Championship tournament and didn't face the Scots before their 7-6 defeat by Norway in the semis.

The Brits may be feeling pressure with a clash against gold medal favourites Canada coming up just 13 hours later, and the Swedish pair look value.

Even if they lose both matches, Dodds and Mouat should still easily qualify for the knockout and it will be interesting to see how their current 3-1 quote for gold changes after those two clashes.

The early hours of Thursday morning will see the women's ice hockey preliminary round begin. Narrow gold medal favourites Canada are 1-100 to beat Switzerland while defending Olympic champs USA are 1-18 against Finland.
