Richard Birch's play of the day at Huntingdon

Calvic
3.35 Huntingdon

I wasn’t the only one who felt Stuart Edmunds had gained a well-handicapped horse ahead of Calvic’s first run for the stable at Huntingdon recently. Backed from a top price of 12-1 the previous evening, the lightly raced Calvic was sent off 100-30 before finishing third to Pearly Island in a 2m4f handicap chase.

Held up in midfield during the early stages, Calvic was noted moving strongly when he made a significant mistake four out. He recovered from that error to make rapid headway after the third-last, before keeping on at just the one pace up the home straight.

It’s unlikely that Calvic would have won if he hadn’t made that mistake. However, it’s hard to argue he wouldn’t have finished much closer.

The handicapper has dropped Calvic 2lb for that defeat, and there is no doubt he has the ability to win Huntingdon’s 2m4f handicap chase (3.35) in decisive fashion off a career-low mark of 89, given a trouble-free round.
