York going improves to good with drying conditions forecast to continue

After avoiding the worst of the deluge that swept through wide areas of Yorkshire this week, the ground at York has continued to dry out and was on Sunday described as good for the four-day Ebor meeting which begins on Wednesday.

Heavy rain led to a flood warning being issued for areas surrounding the River Ouse – including the Knavesmire – last Sunday, but more settled conditions have ensued and are set to continue throughout the week.

Speaking on Sunday, York assistant clerk of the course Anthea Morshead said: "We've changed to good all round [from good to soft] but there's still plenty of moisture right through the profile of the ground. It looks a great forecast for racing for the rest of the week.

"There is nothing too dramatic in the forecast either way, which is nice to see. The area of low pressure we had is slowly moving away and is set be replaced by an area of high pressure this week. If we had been offered that forecast a few weeks ago we would gladly have taken it."

Temperatures in York are forecast to slowly increase in the coming days, with conditions set to settle between 20C and 23C.

Morshead added: "The forecast now is looking quite settled although we do have the risk of catching the odd light shower today and on Tuesday and Wednesday. The rest of the week looks like getting warmer getting into the low 20s. If that forecast is correct we expect the ground to continue to dry out slowly throughout the meeting."
