Wednesday's card at Newbury has historically thrown up smart types who go on to big-race success later in their career. It goes without saying that the maiden and novice hurdle contests should be followed closely, but there has also been plenty of long-term clues emerging from the other races at the meeting.

Prodec Networks Juvenile Hurdle (12.20)

This race comes at a time when the Triumph Hurdle picture has not fully taken shape, yet the contest has been useful in identifying some good long-term prospects.

This 2m½f race has produced several horses who have proved to be more than juvenile hurdlers. The admirable Third Intention won this in 2009 at the start of a length career featuring wins in the National Spirit Hurdle and Old Roan Chase, while Clan Des Obeaux, winner of last season's King George VI Chase, bolted up by 21 lengths in 2015.

3.00Defi Sacre (6-5 F)

3.30Midnight Ginger (6-1)
She is the type her trainer will win more races with, either in bumpers or over hurdles

Prodec Networks Maiden Hurdle (12.50)

Another contest that has thrown up several classy sorts and particularly those who have thrived over fences.

Peterborough Chase scorer Josses Hill (2013) and subsequent Gerry Feilden Hurdle winner High Bridge (2016) are two victors who graduated to big-race success.

The talented Dashel Drasher, an easy winner at Haydock and placed behind Champ over fences, was fourth behind Rathhill in last year's race.

Prodec Networks Chase (1.20)

This staying novices' handicap chase has, unsurprisingly, thrown up horses who have gone on to run well in the Ladbrokes Trophy.

Dingo Dollar, who won this Class 3 contest in 2017, went on to finish third in Newbury's showpiece, while 2016 winner Beware The Bear, last season's Ultima Handicap victor, has twice finished fourth in the Newbury's jumps season highlight.

Conundrum EBF Stallions "National Hunt" Novices' Hurdle (2.25)

Ryanair Chase winner Uxizandre is the undoubted star name on this race's roll of honour. The former Alan King-trained gelding is renowned for giving AP McCoy his final Cheltenham Festival winner but he also struck in the Grade 1 Manifesto Novices' Chase at Aintree in 2014.

Other high-class individuals to land this extended 2m4f event include subsequent Grade 2 winner Mr Whipped, the useful Value At Risk and Tidal Flow.

Beaten runners in previous runnings include this season's Greatwood Hurdle winner Harambe, Caspian Caviar Gold Cup scorer Warthog and Kim Muir winner Same Difference.
