Monday

If you consider yourself hard done by when waking up on Monday morning for a long, hard week of work, spare a thought for the 17 runners in the Surrey National (3.50) who have to tackle a gruelling 3m5f in testing ground – the definition of a true slog. Carlisle and Newcastle provide further jumps and all-weather action to kick off the week. Saturday entries will also filter through in the afternoon.

Tuesday

Wetherby will host its first fixture for a while following a series of weather-related cancellations. Wolverhampton provides racing in the evening, but the standout fixture is at Taunton, where the £18,500 Greene King Handicap Hurdle (4.15) is the feature race on the seven-race card.

Off the track, the deadline for handicap entries at the Cheltenham Festival passes, with the entries revealed later in the week and the weights published the following week.

Wednesday

Unbeaten for Willie Mullins, Laurina holds an entry into the Listed Coral Quevega Mares Hurdle (2.40) at Punchestown, while a Pertemps qualifier (3.15) could provide some big Cheltenham Festival clues.

The popular Veterans' Chase Series continues at Doncaster, and Chelmsford hosts the first of six extra fixtures scheduled by the BHA to counteract races lost during the equine flu crisis. Ludlow, Newcastle and Wolverhampton also host meetings on a busy day.

Thursday

Ireland once again supplies the best of the jumping action, with the Grade 3 BetVictor Michael Purcell Memorial Novice Hurdle the highlight at Thurles. Five fixtures are due to be run in Britain on another busy day, including another of the extra fixtures at Wolverhampton.

Friday

Exeter becomes the latest course to remind the racing public that Nationals are not restricted to Aintree, with the Devon National (4.20) taking place over 3m6½f. Another Pertemps qualifier is also part of the card, with Catterick and Warwick further bolstering the racing on show for jumps fans. The all-weather die-hards are catered for by Lingfield and Chelmsford.

Saturday

It may not be quite as hectic as last Saturday, but there is still lots going on. The Eider Chase, sponsored by Vertem for the first time, is the main event at Newcastle, with the Betway Winter Derby (3.15) filling the same slot at Lingfield, where odds-on favourite Wissahickon should prove a tough nut to crack.

A third Pertemps qualifier in four days takes place at Chepstow, but Kempton is the star meeting of the day with no less than four Graded races. The £100,000 888Sport Handicap Chase (3.35) is the most valuable race at the dual-purpose course, while winners of the Adonis Hurdle (2.25) and Pendil Novices' Chase (1.50) have gone on to top-level glory at Cheltenham in the past decade.

After missing his intended engagement at Gowran Park on Saturday, Gold Cup favourite Presenting Percy could line up at Fairyhouse.

Sunday

One of Fontwell's biggest days of the season features the National Spirit Hurdle, a race won by Old Guard last year from another previous victor, the tenacious Lil Rockerfeller.
