What's on this week: all eyes on Glorious Goodwood and the Galway festival
Monday
In a week where two extremely different festivals compete for the eyes of the racing world, Monday represents an anomaly as the opening day of Galway's seven-day festival dominates proceedings.
The highlight is the Connacht Hotel (Q.R.) Handicap (7.40) where Willie Mullins runs four – Legal Spin, Royal Illusion, Mr Adjudicator and Great White Shark. The powerful Closutton trainer is attempting to land the staying contest for a third year in a row.
The £75,000 Sprint Series Finale at Windsor (7.50) will no doubt be competitive as ever, with 16 runners in the final field. Ayr, Newton Abbot and Ffos Las also stage fixtures.
Tuesday
The Qatar Goodwood festival – referred to by many still as Glorious Goodwood – begins with a bang as Stradivarius attempts to win a third Goodwood Cup (3.35) on the spin in a mini rematch of the Ascot Gold Cup against Dee Ex Bee and Cross Counter.
The Vintage Stakes (2.25) looks a fabulous renewal as Chesham winner Pinatubo clashes with one of the most talked-up juveniles of the season in Visinari. They take on the unbeaten duo Mystery Power and Positive.
The highlight at Galway is the BMW Mile Handicap (7.40), while Yarmouth, Beverley, Worcester and Perth also race.
Wednesday
The Sussex Stakes (3.35) will pit the likes of Circus Maximus, Phoenix Of Spain and Too Darn Hot against the older milers for the first time, with the Molecomb Stakes (3.00) the other Group race on the card at Goodwood.
The €300,000 theTote.com Galway Plate (7.20) has been won by numerous Grade 1 winners in recent seasons and could see another star born, with several scorers at the highest level set to be in the field.
There are four other meetings in Britain, including an evening card at Sandown.
Thursday
The Guinness Galway Hurdle (4.55) is worth the same as the Plate and as usual looks a thrilling contest on paper. Champion jumps trainer Willie Mullins is likely to be heavily represented.
Day three at Goodwood is dominated by the fillies with the Nassau Stakes (3.35) the clear highlight, although the Richmond Stakes (2.25) and Gordon Stakes (3.00) provide part of an excellent undercard.
Friday
One King George has just passed but a thrill of another kind could be in store in Goodwood's own version, as Battaash bids for a third win in the Group 2 sprint (3.35).
The typically tricky puzzle which goes by the name of the Golden Mile (3.00) is also on the card, while the main race at Galway is the Guinness Handicap (6.50).
Racing also takes place at Bangor, Wolverhampton, Musselburgh, Bath and on Newmarket's July course.
Saturday
The final day at Goodwood revolves around one of the handicap highlights on the season, the Unibet Stewards' Cup (3.40), but the Group 2 Lillie Langtry Stakes (3.00) is also likely to prove an exciting contest.
There is Listed action at Newmarket and a Grade B handicap hurdle at Galway.
Sunday
Chester and Market Rasen are tasked with providing Sunday's fare in Britain, with the final day of another long week at Galway the sole fixture in Ireland.
