What goes on in a racing yard? Head to Malton or Epsom open days to find out

Visitors will get the chance to see behind the scenes at a major training centre on Sunday when the Malton and Epsom open days return after a Covid-enforced break.

A dozen yards will throw open their doors in Malton and seven in Epsom at events that tie in with the first ever National Racehorse Week.

Roger Fell is one of the trainers involved in Malton, which is also a crucial fundraiser for Racing Welfare, and said: "The general public need to know what goes on in racing yards; it's an opportunity for them to see how it all works, and see how happy our staff and horses are.

"It's a real team effort – it's all about them and the horses."

Groom Debra Hutchinson, who has worked for Fell for nearly five years, benefited from Racing Welfare support when she dislocated a shoulder while leading up a horse at Newmarket.

She said: "Racing Welfare provided funding so that I could have physio at Jack Berry House a couple of times a week and that was absolutely fantastic.

"The open day is a really good opportunity for the public to see what's going on and understand more about racing. It’s nice from my point of view that you have the time to chat to the public. You can’t do that at the races."

Other yards welcoming the public include those of Tim Easterby, John Quinn and Nigel Tinkler, while the Injured Jockeys Fund rehabilitation and fitness centre at Jack Berry House will be open from 11am to 1pm.

Stables will be open between 8.45am and 12pm and afternoon action on the Highfield Gallops will include a dog show, pony club mounted games and an inter-yard team competition.

Parking for the event is at Highfield Gallops and shuttle buses will run to the yards from there. Admission is £15 for adults and £11 for over-65s, with no charge for under-16s.
