What we learned from Saturday and is there an Oaks dark horse out on Sunday?

The 2022 Flat season is picking up pace and it is full steam ahead to the first of the Classics – the Qipco 2,000 Guineas and 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket – on April 30 and May 1 respectively.

Market movers come thick and fast as the key Classic trials are run in Britain and Ireland, but big-race contenders can come from anywhere and it's easy to miss a potential dark horse. Our Classic Clues series, which runs every morning, has you covered.

Here's a recap of Saturday's action and how it has impacted the Classic betting, while we mark your card with key names to note on Sunday.

Racing round-up: Perfect Power cements place in 2,000 Guineas picture

The Group 3 Watership Down Stud Too Darn Hot Greenham Stakes is the place to start from Saturday’s action as Perfect Power justified favouritism at the expense of fellow 2,000 Guineas entrants Lusail and Angel Bleu.

The Richard Fahey-trained hopeful made it a hat-trick of Group wins since being partnered with Christophe Soumillon. Prominent throughout, he led inside the final furlong and kept on well to land the spoils.

After his performance, Perfect Power is now as short as 7-1 (from 20-1) for the Newmarket Classic.

Also on the card was the Group 3 Dubai Duty Free Stakes (registered as the Fred Darling) which was won by 1,000 Guineas entrant Wild Beauty. This was a welcome form boost to the current Classic favourite Inspiral, as she has beaten this filly comfortably on two different occasions.

Elsewhere, another entrant for the fillies' showpiece at Newmarket was Toy, who ran out an easy five-length winner in the opening maiden contest at Cork to throw her name into the reckoning – adding to Aidan O’Brien’s packed line up.

Market mover:

Qipco 2,000 Guineas
Perfect Power 7 (from 20)

Qipco 1,000 Guineas
Wild Beauty 12 (from 20)
Jumbly 16 (from 25)
Toy 20 (from 33-1)

Cazoo Oaks
Toy 20 (from 25)

What they said:

Richard Fahey, trainer of Perfect Power:

"I was very confident he would get seven, Christophe said he’d stay seven last year. When a horse has so much speed like he has, it is always a worry on your mind but today was great and everything worked well.

"We will sit down and have a think about the Guineas. Christophe was delighted he jumped out the gates, because he was a little bit slow before and at no stage did he think he was going to get beat, which was good. It was a decent race today, I thought it was quite a deep Greenham."

Perfect by name and by nature? Guineas decision on hold for Richard Fahey star

William Buick, rider of Wild Beauty:

"She beat a Breeders' Cup winner and showed us last season she wanted a mile. She's always been very genuine. The team will make a decision and she'll have plenty of options. Any of the Guineas races would naturally be under strong consideration. The horses are running really well and long may that continue."

All eyes on . . . Newbury

All eyes will be on the 1m2f Highclere Thoroughbred Racing Maiden Fillies' Stakes (3.21) where there is potential to see a dark horse for the Cazoo Oaks at Epsom.

William Buick and Charlie Appleby will look to continue an amazing week with newcomer Life Of Dreams, who is likely to go off the short-priced favourite.

However, she will face strong competition from the William Haggas pair of Perfect Alibi, who if successful will bid to give the Queen a winner in the Oaks for the first time since 1977, and Pawapuri, both newcomers.

John Gosden and Frankie Dettori have a fantastic record in this race, and although their runner Atlantis doesn’t have an entry to the June Classic, she will be one to watch and you can’t rule this one out for a powerful combination.
