Fears over what 2023 could bring amid the bleak economic picture have led long-serving Lambourn trainer Jonathan Portman to speak candidly about his worries for the future.

Portman, who has held a licence since 1998, has had a productive season with 24 winners, which is the second-most prolific campaign of his career.

He has linked up again with one-time protege Ned Curtis and intends to make him a big part of the operation, but that is not an indication his yard's footprint is about to explode.
