The trainer has a fine touch with sprinters and the improving three-year-old boasts some solid form, which includes a smart course-and-distance victory at the Dante meeting. Remember, Cotai Glory was a 50-1 third behind Marsha for the yard in 2017.

Rob Hornby enjoyed a big moment at the track earlier this season when winning a valuable handicap aboard Pivoine, and could be in line for further York success this week.

Fresh from a Group 3 win in the Geoffrey Freer at Newbury on Technician, Hornby has some interesting rides for trainer Martyn Meade on the first two days of the meeting.

Last year, the jockey recorded a new best of 59 winners, and with 39 already in the bank he is on course to surpass that tally. A strong Ebor meeting could open more doors for the promising young rider.

The Malton trainer has enjoyed three winners from 12 runners on the Knavesmire this season, posting a £1 level-stake profit of £12.50, and has strong claims of striking with exciting juvenile Spartan Fighter and sprint handicapper Justanotherbottle.

Spartan Fighter defeated Norfolk and Prix Robert Papin scorer A'Ali at Ripon in June and is set for a tilt at Group 2 company in the Gimcrack on Friday after a cosy length win at this track last month.

Carroll may well land the first blow with Justanotherbottle, a recent fifth in the Stewards' Cup, and rated a leading contender in the opening sprint handicap on day one.

A wind op in April has led to something of a renaissance for this six-year-old in his four subsequent starts and he will fly the flag for Karl Burke in the £1 million Ebor on Saturday.

Rated 109, the Old Newton Cup winner has climbed 14lb in the weights since the end of June and, unbelievably for a horse of his age, could prove himself to be ahead of the handicapper.

The son of Doctor Dino is held in the highest regard by his trainer, who will have him primed for this, and a trip to the Melbourne Cup could follow if he finishes in the first three.

Weekender was second in last year's Ebor and could cap a big four days for Khalid Abdullah, whose racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe is also chairman of York racecourse.

The owner is represented by Logician in the Group 2 Great Voltigeur on Wednesday, the mighty Enable in the Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks on Thursday, and the fancied Devero in the 1m4f handicap on Friday.
