Unbeaten Coventry winner Calyx 6-1 for 2,000 Guineas after punters pile in

John Gosden will not be saddling long-time ante-post favourite Too Darn Hot in the Qipco 2,000 Guineas on May 4, but punters have latched on to another of the stable's stars and supported Calyx into as short 6-1 on Tuesday.

He was available at 20-1 on Monday, but no bookmaker was offering more than half that price 24 hours later about the son of Kingman, who was unbeaten in two starts as a juvenile, including the Group 2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Calyx was ruled out for the remainder of last season following a setback and has not raced as a three-year-old, but Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager to owner Khalid Abdullah, said the colt put in a good piece of work on Saturday and remains under consideration for the first Classic of the season at Newmarket.

He said: "He's been in good form and working well and the 2,000 Guineas has always been in our minds. It's been a long time since Royal Ascot and to put him straight into the Guineas may be a big ask. A decision will be made about his participation towards the end of the week."

Kingman was second in the 2,000 Guineas before winning the Irish equivalent, but Calyx has yet to race beyond six furlongs and is currently 8-1 for the Commonwealth Cup over that sprinting trip.

Regarding his optimum conditions and the possibility of Calyx staying the distance, Grimthorpe said: "He's bred to stay a mile, but he showed a lot of speed at two. I wouldn't think he would get much further than a mile."

Gosden, speaking at Yarmouth on Tuesday, said: "He's still in the race and we'll see. He'll work and we'll make a decision. We would like to see a little bit of rain."

Calyx was available with Betway at 14-1 on Monday, but was cut to 15-2 on Tuesday and spokesman Alan Alger said: "With leading hope Too Darn Hot out, we’ve seen the beginnings of what could become a significant move for another unbeaten colt of John Gosden’s in the 2,000 Guineas market."

Gosden has yet to win the Guineas, but Aidan O'Brien will be seeking his tenth victory and he saddles 7-2 favourite Ten Sovereigns. Winner of the Middle Park on the Rowley Mile course, Ten Sovereigns also only raced over six furlongs at two and will head back to Newmarket without a prep run.

He will be joined in the race by second favourite and Vertem Trophy winner Magna Grecia, who can be backed at 5-1.
