Training stalwart Bill Holden dies aged 90

Bill Holden, who trained on the Flat for 35 years, has died at the age of 90.

Holden operated a stable in Newmarket between 1957 and 1971 before moving to Exning the following year where he trained until 1992.

In total, Holden sent out 216 winners with a seasonal best of 15 in 1978. His biggest successes came with Bucks King, who won the 1962 Esher Cup, while Royal Yacht was another familiar name who landed the Great St Wilfrid Handicap in 1966.

Before becoming a trainer, he was an apprentice for Jack Reardon at Epsom and rode a few winners as a jockey on the Flat.
