Trainers and jockeys on Thursday acknowledged the need to examine whip rules and their implementation globally following South Africa's potentially ground-breaking trial of races without them.

Last Saturday the first of these contests was staged at Turffontein, a move that could have huge repercussions for the sport globally.

Penalties handed out to six jockeys in the Melbourne Cup for breaches of whip rules and Christophe Soumillon's ride on Thunder Snow at the Breeders' Cup put the sensitive issue in the spotlight again.
