Tonight's racing: three runners who catch the eye
There are five evening meetings tonight, with jumps action at Worcester and Down Royal, but it is Leopardstown which takes the spotlight, and in particular the Saval Beg Stakes, which historically has proved a fantastic trial for the Ascot Gold Cup.
Rostropovich
6.00 Leopardstown
Bought for 1,100,000gns as a yearling, Rostropovich is bred to be the best. His dam Tyranny was a dual winner for John Dunlop but what she has achieved in the breeding shed has surpassed her efforts on track. She has produced Zoffany, the exceptional sprinter-miler, and Wilshire Boulevard, who won the Anglesey Stakes, and it wouldn't be a surprise were Rostropovich, who is by Frankel, were to follow in their footsteps.
Order Of St George
7.05 Leopardstown
Aidan O'Brien has won this race with Yeats, Fame And Glory, and this horse last year, and they all went on to triumph at Ascot. Order Of St George has shown he is a horse of considerable class, and despite being beaten by Torcedor on his return, will strip far fitter here. It will be a surprise if he cannot account for his four rivals, as he is officially 12lb superior.
Great Fighter
Jim Goldie and Sam James have been in superb form of late, which was highlighted when Sir Chauvelin won this time last week at Hamilton. Great Fighter has been a rejuvenated character since the visor was applied, winning twice over hurdles and finishing a creditable third to John Constable in the Swinton last time. This is his first time wearing the equipment back on the Flat.
