Copperhead
Winner, Ascot, Saturday

Copperhead put up the most impressive performance by a novice chaser this season bar none when winning at Ascot on Saturday and he looks a first-rate RSA contender.

He was over two seconds faster than the 157-rated Ballyoptic half an hour later despite being eased down for the last half-furlong. Don't forget he's only a six-year-old and there should be plenty more improvement to come.

Spyglass Hill
Winner, Gowran Park, Saturday

While Chris's Dream and Cilaos Emery were garnering all the headlines at Gowran on Saturday, the beginners' chase might have thrown up more Cheltenham clues.

The winner, Spyglass Hill, is on target to emulate his stablemate A Plus Tard in the novice handicap chase at the festival, while the next three home all look capable of winning valuable handicaps in the near future too.

Second, Ascot, Saturday

This work-in-progress was no match for the classy Sporting John at Ascot over the weekend, but he was noted doing some decent late work and looks sure to come into his own when the ground at last begins to dry out.

A confidence booster on one of the smaller tracks looks on the cards, but there’s no doubt a decent prize in him down the line.

Third, Ascot, Saturday

Although finishing around seventeen lengths by Nordano on his handicap debut, Eden Du Houx still emerged with credit in a rallying third place.

The run came soon enough after a breakthrough success over hurdles at Chepstow this month and he made a really shuddering mistake at the third-last that cost him. The experience should bring him on and an even stiffer test ought to suit. Don’t give up on him.
