Rouge Vif
Winner, Warwick, Saturday

The Kingmaker is a great trial for the Arkle as Warwick is a good test of jumping and Rogue Vif passed with flying colours.

He has improved with each run over fences and seems to be one of those horses who never gets the attention he deserves, with the form of Saturday's win being extremely solid.

The Arkle doesn't look a great race this year and, on what he showed at Warwick, Rouge Vif would appear to have as good a chance as any. [Tom Segal]

A Toi Phil
Fourth, Newbury, Saturday

All eyes were on Native River in the Betfair Denman Chase and he upheld his Gold Cup credentials with an easy victory, but the real eyecatcher was fourth-placed A Toi Phil on his debut for Gary Moore.

Held up way off the pace, A Toi Phil jumped well and would have been third in another stride despite returning from a five-month layoff.

It looks like he is being teed up for another crack at the National, in which he wouldn't be a forlorn hope as he ran well last year despite being held up right out the back on the wide outside. [Tom Segal]

Bonny Houxty
Third, Carlisle, Monday

This lightly raced mare belied huge odds of 250-1 with a rock-solid third behind a pair of fairly useful mares on her hurdling debut.

The Donald Whillans-trained seven-year-old took a while to settle off a muddling pace, but she ran on late as the penny dropped.

She looks nailed on to improve for an even stiffer test and can win a couple of races before the season is out. [Dave Orton]

Red Jasper
Eighth, Wolverhampton, Wednesday

Having bolted in at Newcastle last month, Red Jasper was expected to prove hard to stop under a penalty when turned out quickly at Wolverhampton.

The habitual sluggish starter endured a nightmare passage when about to find full stride on the much tighter track and finished down the field with plenty left in the tank.

Reverting to a more galloping track really should see him find compensation and he is declared to run at Kempton on Wednesday. [Dave Orton]
