Yesterday, Jim Crowley refused to accept what is believed to be a record-breaking tally of 46 winners in a calendar month had all but sealed him a first Flat jockeys' title, although the bookies offer no better than 1-10 he will lift the trophy.

Before racing yesterday, Crowley led last year's champion Silvestre de Sousa by nine (128-119) for the Stobart-sponsored championship.

In enjoying his most prolific month, the former jump jockey edged past riding greats Fred Archer and Sir Gordon Richards, who had recorded scores of 45, although it is not entirely clear if Crowley has established a new British record as it has not been researched.
