The Irish bloodstock industry faces great uncertainty surrounding Brexit but it received a timely boost on Friday, with talks now at an advanced stage regarding the movement of horses across the British land bridge to France.

Horse Racing Ireland has welcomed new clarity on equine transportation procedures through the UK from January 1, with a webinar jointly hosted by the departments of agriculture in Ireland (DAFM) and Britain (Defra) revealing advances have been made in recent days.

A significant number of mares from mainland Europe travel to Ireland through Britain for breeding purposes, while a large number of Irish horses travel through Britain to Dover to gain access to mainland Europe for race meetings and sales.
