Three runners at Wolverhampton to note tonight
Wolverhampton starts before the hubbub will have died down at Aintree. The minor cards on Grand National day often include more than their share of interesting types and here are three for this evening card . . .
Carraigin Aonair7.00
The tailend of 2016 was a memorable time for Carraigin Aonair, who won a 23-runner handicap on Leopardstown's Flat finale card and then at Dundalk the following month, both over 1m4f.
It's been a struggle since, but that's largely reflected in her mark and she starts out in Britain rated 5lb lower than she was in Ireland when registering the first of her two wins in late 2016.
Crucially, she is also starting out for trainer Olly Murphy, who has already revived or improved many horses like her. Under suitable conditions and with Luke Morris booked, an explosive return is expected.
Knockabout Queen7.30
The start Mick Channon has made with his two-year-olds this year has been electric. He has sent out four: three of them have won and the other, Kinks at Kempton last Saturday, was beaten a head.
Admittedly, Knockabout Queen doesn't immediately jump off the page as an early two-year-old, but she's hardly likely to be a backward type either. Her dam Rough Courte, whom Channon also trained, did all her winning as a three-year-old but showed her best form at two, while St Leger-winning sire Sixties Icon is well capable of getting two-year-old winners.
Of the standard-setters on what form there is, Penniesfromheaven was third to a Channon winner on debut, while Deia Glory showed bags of speed in what looked a good race at Newcastle on her first start and has drawn stall 1.
Logi9.00
Logi made his debut for the Rebecca Bastiman yard in February over course and distance and was sent off a well-backed 2-1 favourite. He missed the break there and lost all chance with it then fared little better at significantly bigger odds over 6f at Newcastle next time.
The money is coming again here. He was offered at 25-1 to small stakes last night but came into 5-1 this morning. Given he was beaten a short head off 2lb higher as recently as September, that sort of money is worth noting.
