'I thought we were going to do it' - more Arc agony for James Doyle
Denied Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe glory on the line three years ago, James Doyle on Monday admitted to further Longchamp agony as he revealed he fleetingly thought he had Sunday's race won on Hurricane Lane.
Doyle was denied aboard Sea Of Class when Enable held his mount by a short neck in 2018 and St Leger scorer Hurricane Lane went down by three-quarters of a length and a short-head to Torquator Tasso and Tarnawa in the 100th running of the great race.
The jockey said: "There was definitely a moment when I thought we'd timed it well and he was going to do it. It felt like he got his head in front but it's a hard race to win and the German horse kicked again. Christophe Soumillon pointed out to me that by the time we'd got to the second winning post, the winner was a good five lengths in front of us.
