The Punt Daily: Tom Collins' free horse racing tips on Saturday
BANKER
Pistoletto(4.00 Curragh)
This son of War Front is likely to be shorter than ideal in the betting, but he is the banker of the day in what looks to be a pretty average renewal of the Group 2 Anglesey Stakes. Aidan O'Brien's colt is unbeaten in two starts, hacking up on debut by five and a half lengths before proving too good for three rivals at Cork despite kicking off both back shoes and banging his hip on the stalls. The fact he still proved the best that day shows how tough and classy Pistoletto is and I'll be shocked if he doesn't keep his unbeaten record. He's my favourite two-year-old at the moment and he can take this en route to National Stakes glory.
GOOD THING
Red Starlight(4.45 Newbury)
Although she has to give weight away to her younger rivals, Red Starlight holds leading claims in the penultimate mile handicap on the Newbury card for Richard Hannon and Cheveley Park Stud. This four-year-old filly, who boasts course-and-distance form, is very smart on her day and is the only horse to have beaten Lincoln winner Auxerre throughout his career (albeit on debut). Red Starlight was sent off favourite for the Spring Cup here earlier this season and finished a creditable sixth of 26 and has had a pretty light campaign since. She was last seen finishing eighth in the Royal Hunt Cup and the key to her chance is the recent rain, with all of her best performances on turf coming when soft is in the going description.
EACH-WAY PLAY
Reshoun (2.25 Newbury)
Friday's rain will also help the chance of Ian Williams's five-year-old Reshoun, who looks overpriced at around 16-1 in the Marsh Cup. The ex-French-trained stayer has never run over this kind of stamina-sapping trip before, but has looked as though as step up in distance would bring about further improvement when staying on stoutly over 1m6f on a couple of occasions. Reshoun, who has recorded both of his British victories on good to soft and heavy ground, is likely to have been targeted at this race by his shrewd dual-purpose trainer and given he was a narrow third off 1lb lower in the November Handicap, it's easy to argue that he is well handicapped off his current mark. A recent wind op also gives hope an improved effort is in the offing.
