'The job has changed' - Josh Guerriero to join Oliver Greenall as joint-trainer
After coming within one winner of his personal-best season in 2021-22, Oliver Greenall will launch a new career as a joint-trainer this weekend.
Josh Guerriero, with whom he rode as an amateur for many years, is to appear alongside him on the licence at Stockton Hall Farm in Cheshire, where he has been assistant for a while.
The pair will have their first official runner together when Gareth Cael bids for a novice handicap hurdle at Uttoxeter on Saturday.
Greenall, who has been training in his own name for six years, explained: "Josh and I have been partners in the business for a while and it was always the plan to do this at the start of the season.
"My role has been dealing with the owners, entertaining them and going to the races a lot more because we probably have 60 horses but we have 280 owners because we have so many syndicates.
"In the winter the first race can be 12 o'clock so very often you're leaving the yard before most of the horses have done their work and it wasn't working for me doing it all. So for the last few years Josh has been in the yard every day and I've been out and about. Having him on the licence reflects our partnership."
Guerriero worked for Phillip Hobbs, Victor Dartnall and Dan Skelton before joining Greenall, who said: "Some people are sceptical of a joint licence but in the more modern age of racing, there's a lot more paperwork and a lot more entertaining so the job has changed."
Gareth Cael faces 14 rivals under Craig Nicol at Uttoxeter and Greenall said: "He was a bit unlucky at Southwell last time and he should go close."
The yard had 36 winners last season, one short of its best total of 37 set the previous campaign, and Greenall reflected: "We had a quiet January and February when the horses weren't quite right but even with that we still picked up plenty of winners."
