The heavyweight clashes to look forward to on the track this summer

With the first British and Irish Classics and Royal Ascot all in the history books in a busy few weeks following the resumption of racing, we take a look at some of the potentially thrilling clashes that could be in the pipeline.

Siskin v Pinatubo

They were both precocious talents at two and neither were beaten as juveniles, but the trajectory of Siskin's and Pinatbuo's careers at three have taken different turns.

Siskin, winner of the Group 1 Railway Stakes as a juvenile, appears to have fully trained on, displaying a wonderful turn of foot to win the Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh after a tactical affair.

Trainer Ger Lyons indicated a trip to Goodwood for the Qatar Sussex Stakes was the likely plan for Siskin and he could meet Pinatubo, who has something to prove after his unbeaten aura vanished first in the 2,000 Guineas and then in the St James's Palace Stakes.

Neither performance from the two-time Group 1 winner was bad, far from it, as he finished third at Newmarket and arguably took a step forward to finish a length second behind Palace Pier in Saturday's St James's Palace Stakes.

However, Godolphin will be keen to get Pinatubo back on the winning trail and trainer Charlie Appleby indicated the easier mile of the Sussex Stakes on July 29 could be next.

Love v Frankly Darling

The Epsom Classics – the Oaks and the Derby – are less than two weeks away, with Love and Frankly Darling dominating the market for the fillies' Classic.

The talented females have put up two of the best performances of the season so far, with Love bouncing back from a Fillies' Mile defeat on her last start at two to emerge a dominant winner of the 1,000 Guineas, a sixth winner of the race for Aidan O'Brien.

Love is the 13-8 favourite for the Oaks and, although she has stamina to prove on the track, there is every indication she will get the mile and a half trip in her attempt to emulate Minding in doing the Guineas-Oaks double for O'Brien.

However, Frankly Darling looks a significant threat to Love's Oaks bid, backing up an impressive five-length win at Newcastle on the first day of the season with a fine Ribblesdale success at Royal Ascot.

Frankly Darling's trainer John Gosden has won the Oaks three times, including twice in the last three years with Enable and Anapurna, and this daughter of Frankel appears destined for Epsom on July 4 after her easy length-and-three-quarters success at Ascot.

Golden Horde v Hello Youmzain

The introduction of the Commonwealth Cup has limited early clashes between the top three-year-old sprinters and their elders, but it often creates a race to savour in the Darley July Cup at Newmarket.

Three-year-olds have won four of the last five July Cups since the Commonwealth Cup was introduced at Royal Ascot, although inaugural winner Muhaarar is the only one to complete the double.

Clive Cox, who has won the July Cup twice with Lethal Force (2013) and Harry Angel (2017), will be hoping Golden Horde can step up again on his decisive Commonwealth Cup win to beat his elders at Newmarket, which should include Diamond Jubilee winner Hello Youmzain.

Trained by Kevin Ryan, Hello Youmzain has now won Group 1 sprints at six furlongs at Haydock and Ascot, leaving Newmarket as the only destination remaining to complete that achievement in Britain.

The trainer's son Adam indicated after the Diamond Jubilee that the July Cup is "the obvious choice", although it is set to be a deep field, with Diamond Jubilee third Sceptical and unexposed Abernant Stakes winner Oxted also confirmed as likely runners.
