The best and worst from this week's racing

Performance of the weekend

It's renowned for being one of the toughest puzzles in the Flat racing calendar. The Weatherbys Super Sprint is always a spectacle, but this year the 23-runner cavalry charge was all about one horse.

Bengali Boys, who won his maiden in April before two second places earned him a break, stole the show in Newbury's showpiece, storming clear to win by six lengths to give jockey Barry McHugh the biggest day of his career.

The Molecomb Stakes looks a likely target, and trainer Richard Fahey will be hoping the son of Clodovil can produce a similar performance on the Sussex Downs.

Comeback of the weekend

Why have one comeback when you can have two?

Frankie Dettori was unlucky to miss his beloved Royal Ascot, but now he may well consider doing a Hayley Turner and returning more often, as on the first occasion it yielded him an Irish Oaks win with Enable, and on Saturday he guided Magical Memory to victory in the Group 3 Hackwood Stakes.

Disappointment of the week

As far as the betting was concerned, the world's highest-rated horse Arrogate wasn't competing with the other runners in the San Diego handicap on Sunday evening, and history was his only challenger.

Expectation was understandably high before his ninth career start and Bob Baffert's grey was sent off at odds of 1-20, but he produced a lamentable effort and could manage only fourth behind Accelerate, who hadn't won since September.

The Newbury stalls handlers take a moment to remember colleague Stephen Yarborough, who sadly lost his life at Haydock on Friday.

Quote of the week

"I think Sizing John is going to have to go to Weight Watchers as he's come back in looking fantastically big and really enjoyed his summer break!"

The Flat season is in full swing but it is an exciting time for jumps fans as the heroes of yesteryear begin to return.
