Sir Michael Stoute is an expert at improving older horses and this five-year-old seems just as good at 1m2f as he is at 1m4f. Six lengths behind Cracksman in the race last year, he has been unbeaten since and has an excellent record on soft ground, which he could well get on Champions Day.

Queen Elizabeth II Stakes

This six-year-old is an Ascot specialist who just lacked a big-race win at the track, until he won the Queen Anne Stakes on the first day of the Royal meeting last time. His form figures at the track now read 212261 and, in a notably open miling division, he seems bound to be in among the principals in the QEII. He also won the Balmoral Handicap on this card two years ago.

Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup

Stradivarius claimed the Long Distance Cup on British Champions Day last season to round off a perfect campaign and make it five victories from as many runs, and it would take a brave person to bet against John Gosden's staying superstar doing it again. The five-year-old looked as good as ever on his way to landing the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot this year under Frankie Dettori, and has all the qualities to become the first back-to-back Long Distance winner since Persian Punch in 2002-03.

Qipco Champions Sprint

Three wins from six starts on the straight course at Ascot and unbeaten in two outings this season. Roger Varian's improving five-year-old made short work of 25 rivals when easily landing the Wokingham at the track last time and he is still unexposed and open to further progress at sprint trips. There is no outstanding 6f sprinter in Britain now that Blue Point has been retired and the jump from top handicaps to Group 1 level has been made on many occasions. Cape Byron can do it again.
