Stoute has Eye on Greenham after Expert shines in racecourse gallop
Expert Eye is on course to reappear in the Group 3 Al Basti Equiworld Supporting Greatwood Greenham Stakes at Newbury next weekend after pleasing trainer Sir Michael Stoute in a racecourse gallop at Chelmsford on Saturday morning.
The son of Acclamation has not been sighted since flopping when 4-7 to land the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket in October and is a general 10-1 chance to redeem his reputation back at the Rowley Mile in the Qipco 2,000 Guineas on May 5.
Expert Eye, who won the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood last summer in devastating fashion, was ridden by Ted Durcan in a seven-furlong exercise at the Essex track, in which he was joined by four stablemates.
Stoute reported: "Expert Eye worked nicely on the bridle in a bunch around Chelmsford and he enjoyed the change of scene rather than working up the Al Bahathri.
"We'll declare him for the Greenham at Newbury and have a look at the ground and the weather beforehand to decide if he runs or not."
Closer to hand, the Craven meeting at Newmarket kicks off on Tuesday and Rowley Mile racegoers could be in for an added treat as John Gosden is considering giving his top colt Cracksman a workout before racing on one of the three days.
The weather has hampered Gosden's plans to give the highest-rated horse in Europe some consistent work on turf over the past week, so he is planning to use the racecourse as an alternative.
Last year's Champion Stakes winner is being prepared to reappear in the Group 1 Prix Ganay at Longchamp a fortnight on Sunday.
Gosden said: "Cracksman will have a racecourse gallop somewhere next week as he could do with a change of scene. It'll probably be at Newmarket or Chelmsford."
