Storms continue to wreak havoc with Market Rasen off but Kempton gets go-ahead

Storm Dennis got the better of jumps racing in Britain on Sunday, with Market Rasen joining Exeter in cancelling its card after failing Sunday morning's 7am inspection.

The Lincolnshire racecourse was subject to 25mm of rain overnight, leaving areas of the course waterlogged.

Exeter's rescheduled meeting was cancelled yesterday after a combination of wind and rain, but racing fans can take solace in the knowledge that Kempton's all-weather fixture will remain after passing its Sunday morning inspection.

Jack Pryor, clerk of the course at Market Rasen, said: “We haven’t had much damage to the course, it’s just been the volume of rainfall in such a short period of time. We’ve had 25mm in 12 hours which has saturated the ground and unfortunately we’ve got waterlogging in a number of areas around the track.

"We’ll have a conversation with the BHA and see what the conclusion is, but I’m sure they’ve got a few other British fixtures to try and reschedule as well."

Kempton's all-weather meeting was under threat following Saturday's high winds, but with the storm calming the course officials were happy to give the green light.

Clerk of the course Barney Clifford said: "The wind has calmed sufficiently but it is going to be a very wet day, although that doesn't affect us. It'll be blustery but not as windy as yesterday."

Carlisle's all-hurdle card on Monday is not subject to an inspection, with clerk of the course Kirkland Tellwright confident they are fit to race.

He said on Sunday: “We’re good to go. The going is heavy, we'll probably have light showers today and tomorrow so we’re through the worst of the weather and we’re fit to race.

“There will certainly be six races, but if two races tiered the threshold then another race would divide, making it a seven-race card."

Taunton's meeting on Tuesday has been cancelled due to waterlogging, following 95mm of rain on the track since last Sunday.
