Storm Dennis the potential menace to Exeter's rearranged meeting

Exeter is hoping it is second time lucky on Sunday after losing out to Storm Ciara last weekend, although the hilltop course faces the threat of Storm Dennis, which carries a Met Office yellow warning of strong winds and rain.

Some forecasts have the next storm just missing the Devon course and that it will not be as fierce as Ciara last weekend.

Jack Parkinson, general manager at Exeter, said on Wednesday: "It's certainly looking better than last week but we're monitoring the situation.

"The ground remains soft and raceable as it would have been last Sunday as the wind was the only problem, blowing the wing down on the hurdles and fences.

"There is rain forecast on Saturday and Sunday but it has been dry today and only a few showers are expected tomorrow."

Exeter, who only suffered superficial damage with a boundary fence blown over, refunded racegoers but hopes to attract a good crowd for a meeting that was rescheduled quickly by the BHA and Levy Board after horsemen called for its rescue, with some Cheltenham Festival hopefuls set to run.

Parkinson added: "We will have an all-in-one enclosure and two tickets for £15 with a Valentine's theme to the meeting so hope for a good walk-up.

"We were gutted to lose it last week as it was such a great card, but owners and trainers got behind saving the races and have been true to their word in supporting the races – we're really pleased with the entry."

Two Listed races – a 2m1f novice hurdle (4.10) and 3m Mares' Chase (4.43) – are set to feature on the seven-race card, while the fixture also includes a Pertemps qualifier and the first leg of the 2020 Veterans' Chase Series.

With the weather continuing to cause disruption to jump racing in Britain, an additional fixture has been scheduled to take place at Musselburgh on Tuesday.

Entries for the seven-race card will close at noon on Thursday with declarations to be made by 10am on Monday.
