The Queen entertained an animated Sheikh Fahad in the royal box at Ascot on Saturday, before presenting him with the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes trophy, but Her Majesty also received an award of her own.

Pictures of Roaring Lion's owner cheering on his colt's victory to a fourth Group 1 alongside the Queen ranked among the many memorable public images from British Champions Day, while in a private ceremony the sport's highest-profile owner was presented with the 2018 Longines Ladies Award.

The award, which honours women who have made a significant contribution to the equestrian industry, was given to the Queen in the company of Longines vice-president Juan-Carlos Capelli, International Federation of Horseracing Authorities chairman Louis Romanet, and International Federation for Equestrian Sports president Ingmar De Vos.

Capelli said: "In the light of a long list of remarkable achievements, it's a great honour for Longines to present the 2018 Longines Ladies Award to Her Majesty the Queen, as a celebration of Her Majesty's passion for horses and exceptional commitment to the equine cause.

"This strong dedication to equestrian sports runs in the family, as we were delighted to bestow the same award on the Queen’s daughter, HRH the Princess Royal, in 2016."
