Spare Parts lands win number seven of the year with battling Kempton success
The remarkable Spare Parts became the joint winning-most horse of the all-weather season with a battling success in the 7f handicap at Kempton on Wednesday evening.
Having his 12th run of the year, the son of Choisir, who is owned by Steve Jakes, was backed in to 6-1 (from 10-1) to make it win number seven of 2018. Having raced close to an ordinary pace under Nicola Currie he prevailed under a strong drive to win by a neck in a blanket finish.
He now joins the Archie Watson-trained Captain Lars at the head of the winter AW table and both horses could be in action at Lingfield on Saturday with Captain Lars in the 5f handicap and Spare Parts in the mile handicap.
However, trainer Phil McEntee would really like Spare Parts to go up enough in the weights to qualify for the £50,000 apprentice handicap at Lingfield on Finals day a week on Friday.
He said: "He deserves his place at Lingfield next week. That would be the icing on the cake. Last year if you were rated 90 you got in and he ran off 83 this evening."
