South African visitor sparkles with Sun Chariot on horizon

Smart Call: looked good on Al Bahathri
Smart Call: looked good on Al Bahathri

Smart Call - Alec Laird
One of the highest-rated horses in the world is boarding at Abington Place Stables, passing through Newmarket on her way to a crack at the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf. The three-time Grade 1 winner arrived not long ago after three months' quarantine in Mauritius and looked refreshed in some easy work on the Al Bahathri. She may prepare for her target in the Group 1 Kingdom of Bahrian Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket on October 1.

Midterm - Sir Michael Stoute
Khalid Abdullah's racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe hosted some local Juddmonte Farms staff on the Al Bahathri, where the workers from Banstead Manor and Side Hill were able to catch up with some of the offspring they had helped produce. Not surprisingly, most attention focused on the one-time Derby favourite, who continued his build up to a possible autumn return when breezing a mile.

Wings Of Desire - John Gosden
After 5mm of rain the previous day, the Limekilns were usable again for the first time in over a fortnight and Gosden took advantage when block-booking the trial ground. The King George runner-up enjoyed his first pipe-opener since his gallant Ascot effort and holds two entries at York in a fortnight's time.

Taper Tantrum - Michael Bell
Rated 83 on the Flat, this handicapper is to switch codes and have his first outing over hurdles at Newton Abbot on Wednesday. He looked up for his trip down the M5 on the peat moss gallop on Racecourse Side. Bell is also planning to field stablemate Instant Karma at Newton Abbot, where the in-form trainer last had a runner in 2008.

Magicinthemaking - Jeremy Noseda
A graduate of the Ocala breeze-up sales in Florida, the daughter of Wilcat Heir was ridden by her purchaser, Noseda's wife Kerri, in some easy work at second lot. The $165,000 buy takes after her illustrious stablemate Nemoralia, which is no coincidence as her dam is by Nemoralia's sire More Than Ready.

Great Work!!! Escobar - Hugo Palmer
Palmer had Jim Crowley, Daniel Muscutt, Jack Mitchell and Michael Hills among his ranks on the Al Bahathri on Tuesday, when Hills was sitting pretty on the recent impressive Newbury maiden winner. Palmer may send his flashy type back to Berkshire for the Listed Denford Stud Washington Singer Stakes on Saturday week.

This column highlighted last week's Goodwood winners Ulysses (9-2), Big Orange (11-4) and Kings Fete (5-2), as well as Nottingham scorer Zest (4-1)
