'Somewhat short of acceptable' – BHA hits out at Mullins' ride of the year

The BHA has expressed disappointment after Patrick Mullins won the racing ride of the year at the Jockey Club Racecourses-backed McCoys awards at Cheltenham on Friday night.

Mullins took the accolade for his last-gasp success aboard Rathvinden in the four-mile National Hunt Chase at the festival, a ride that cost him a six-day ban for using the whip "above the permitted level and without giving his horse time to respond from the last fence".

A BHA spokesperson said: "We were extremely surprised and disappointed to learn that Patrick Mullins' ride on Rathvinden was chosen as ride of the year at the McCoys. We are of the view that the rider should not be receiving further recognition for this ride.
