Six horses who made a big impression over the three days at Fairyhouse
6th, RYBO Handicap Hurdle, Tuesday
The versatile seven-year-old mare, who won four times for John Nicholson, looks a shrewd recruit to the Willie Mullins stable.
On her debut for the champion trainer she finished sixth of 16 in the ultra-competitive RYBO Handicap Hurdle over two miles. All her best work was done late and the fact that she beat Magic Of Light in a 2m7f maiden hurdle at Thurles earlier in her career suggests we might not see the best of her until she steps up in trip.
She would make plenty of appeal should she show up in the 2m4f Ballymore Handicap Hurdle, worth €100,000, on the final day of the Punchestown festival.
3rd, BoyleSports Grand National Festival John & Chich Fowler Memorial EBF Mares Chase, Tuesday
On her first start for 277 days, the eight-year-old closed right up on Camelia De Cotte coming down to the second-last only for race fitness to tell inside the final two furlongs.
She was beaten ten lengths into third but was value for finishing closer given how sweetly she travelled into contention. She did make an odd error, but she makes a nice shape over her fences, and a crack at the Galway Plate would not be the craziest idea in the world.
She has a touch of class and was third in the 2018 Coral Cup, just behind Topofthegame.
5th, BoyleSports Irish Grand Nation, Monday
The lightly-raced eight-year-old covered more ground than any other horse in the Boylesports Irish Grand National.
He jumped out to his left at a few fences but David Mullins seemed at pains to keep him away from the main pack throughout. He was beaten 31 lengths into fifth but ran so much better than that and will be of major interest wherever he shows up next.
He has now put two rock-solid efforts back-to-back and can be trusted to give his true running wherever he appears next. With a less scenic route, you sense he might have finished in the first four in the Easter Monday marathon.
5th, Tattersalls Ireland George Mernagh Memorial Sales Bumper, Sunday
The son of Spanish Moon was quite an expensive purchase at €60,000 but it could prove to be money well spent on the evidence of his debut fifth in the Tattersalls Sales Bumper on Sunday.
He was spooked a couple of times in the parade ring beforehand and was green in the race too, so for Mouse Morris' charge to get within six lengths of the winner, Uhtred, bodes well for the future.
He is in the right hands to bring him along gently and he should open his account in a bumper sooner rather than later. He could prove to be as good as anything who ran in the race on Sunday.
Carried out, BoyleSports Novice Handicap Chase, Sunday
Spare a thought for poor Denis O'Regan who must have been cursing his luck when Snugsborough Hall was carried out at the second-last by Mind's Eye in the 2m novice handicap chase on Sunday.
Having won his last two starts, a hat-trick looked on the cards as he crept effortlessly into contention rounding the final bend. He was already trading odds-on in running when the wayward Mind's Eye took him out.
It was rotten luck for all concerned but compensation could await in the valuable EMS Copiers Novice Handicap Chase at Punchestown on Friday week.
Fourth, Irish Stallion Farms EBF Mares Novice Hurdle Championship Final, Sunday
Nothing got near Honeysuckle in the Grade 1 mares' novice hurdle on Sunday, but Tintangle was the only one able to go with the unbeaten mare when she kicked for home over the second-last.
The fact that she was able to do so having jumped deplorably in the early stages suggests there is a decent-sized engine there. She is unexposed over trips beyond two miles and she struck as the second-best mare in the race on Sunday, as she was gunned down only late for third. Her performance can be upgraded.
