Four jumpers who could kick off their season in style at Chepstow this weekend
Regarded by many as the start of the jumps season, Chepstow's Silver Trophy meeting – which starts on Friday – has been a springboard to success for some of the winter's brightest stars. Here we look at this year's potential headliners.
The Grade 2 Persian War Hurdle (2.10 Friday) opens the meeting with a bang and often plays host to some of the smartest hurdlers who have not shed their novice status from the last season.
Monsignor won the race in 2000, while other notable winners include Blaklion and Reve De Sivola. Paul Nicholls has won the race seven times, including with dual King George hero Silviniaco Conti in 2010 and Secret Investor last year.
This time he could be represented by Trevelyn's Corn, who was purchased for £400,000 in December 2017. He has been patiently handled by Nicholls but looked a top prospect when scoring at Wincanton in March.
The Alan King-trained Harambe heads the market and is an obvious danger, as well as four-time winner The Butcher Said.
Equine heroes don't get mightier than Altior, and Friday's 2m novices' hurdle (2.45) marked the start of his unbeaten run back in 2015, while subsequent Grade 1 winner Dynamite Dollars did no harm to the race's reputation by defeating Lostintranslation here in 2017.
This season the torch could be passed to McFabulous, who made a big impression when winning his bumper at the meeting last year before gaining Grade 2 honours at Aintree in April.
He is another under the tutelage of champion trainer Paul Nicholls, and the champion trainer has always held the five-year-old in high regard. This looks the perfect opportunity for the son of Milan to make his hurdles debut.
Possible opposition could include Champion Bumper third Thyme Hill and, perhaps most interestingly, Melrose and Northumberland Plate third Proschema, who is now with Dan Skelton.
The careers of Cue Card and Silviniaco Conti intertwined for many a thrilling battle, and it is fitting the two much-loved characters made their chasing debuts against each other in the Listed 2m3½f novice chase (3.55 Saturday) in 2011.
As well as winning with Cue Card, Colin Tizzard has a strong affinity with the race having run Gold Cup hero Native River in the contest in 2015 and he won it again with the ill-fated Finian's Oscar in 2017. He looks to hold another live chance this year with Reserve Tank.
A dual Grade 1 winner over hurdles at Aintree and Punchestown, the five-year-old looked a natural candidate for fences and will likely be sent off favourite to join classy horses such as Fingal Bay (2012) and Balder Succes (2013) on the race's recent honour roll.
It won't be an easy task however, with the likes of Grade 2 winners Lisnagar Oscar and Secret Investor entered.
First run in 1988, the Silver Trophy (4.30 Saturday) is the feature race of the meeting and for good reason as it has produced many top-class performers.
Grand National winner Don't Push It starred in the race in 2007, while Young Spartacus, Lacdoudal and Taranis also took in the race en route to better things. More recently, the popular Court Minstrel won the race twice in 2015 and 2017 for local trainer Evan Williams.
Josh Gifford trained Bradbury Star to win the race in 1990 and this year his son Nick could have a live contender in speedy hurdler Didtheyleaveuoutto, who promised a great deal as a novice hurdler.
The Champion Bumper and Betfair Hurdle both feature on probable topweight Ballyandy's resume, while Grade 2 winner Coolanly and last year's winner Garo De Juilley will also be bidding to begin their seasons with a bang.
